The article, titled, "China's Cyber Thievery Is National Policy—And Must Be Challenged", elaborates upon the dangers Chinese cyber espionage poses to the U.S. and how China, as a nation that is still in the process of bridging its immense inequality gap and is still in the process of implementing development programs to help boost the standard of life for its populace, sees stealing innovations from competitors as more efficient than developing new technology on its own.

"The bottom line is this: China has a massive, inexpensive work force ravenous for economic growth. It is much more efficient for the Chinese to steal innovations and intellectual property—the source code of advanced economies—than to incur the cost and time of creating their own. They turn those stolen ideas directly into production, creating products faster and cheaper than the U.S. and others."

Chertoff, McConnell, and former Deputy Secretary for Defense William Lynn recommend that the U.S. recognize the long-term and detrimental effects of cyber attacks. Likewise, the U.S. should invest more in science, technology, engineering, and math education to counter that of competing environments. Lastly, American corporations must also do their part and identify and report incidents of cyber theft, while also boosting up their protection through the enhancement of employee computer skills.

Former LAPD Chief of Police William Bratton confirmed for 2012

Former LAPD Chief of Police and former Commissioner for Boston and New York City, William Bratton, is confirmed to speak at the Aspen Security Forum 2012.

Coordinator for Counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin confirmed for 2012

The Department of State's Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Ambassador-at-Large, Daniel Benjamin, is confirmed to speak at the Aspen Security Forum 2012.

Pakistan Ambassador to the U.S. Sherry Rehman confirmed for 2012

Pakistani Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Shehrbano "Sherry" Rehman, is confirmed to speak at the Aspen Security Forum 2012.

ASF Speaker Admiral Eric T. Leiter, who will be speaking at the Forum this July, believes that the American Muslim community needs to be better integrated in American counterterrorism efforts, not dismissed from them. Leiter cautioned further that one of the most serious challenges for national security is the Internet, which terrorist groups are using to spread their violent ideologies and to mobilize sympathizers. Consequently, our expectations of privacy must constantly be reevaluated and factor in the government’s efforts and ability to protect its citizens. Leiter’s last day as Head of the NCTC is Friday. Read the article here.

US worries about Yemen, Somalia terrorist links

According to the AP's Kimberly Dozier, who will be moderating a panel at ASF this summer, in response to recent turmoil that the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has exploited to acquire more territory and weapons, the White House has approved of a new CIA base in the Persian Gulf. The administration has not decided whether US Special Operations Forces will continue to lead the fight against AQAP once the CIA base is complete. State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin reinforced the concern that AQAP has gained momentum from the nation’s recent political upheaval. “We know that militants have shaken [Somali-based] pirates down, and if that results in money being in terrorist pockets, that’s bad news”, said Benjamin in the article, expressing fears that a dangerous connection between the Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shahaab, and AQAP, based just across the Gulf of Aden, could bolster the strength of both. However, Benjamin, who will also be speaking at the forum this summer, is optimistic that new leadership in Yemen will cooperate with the U.S. to conduct counterterrorism efforts. Read the article here.

NCTC Director Leiter Confirmed for ASF 2011

The Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Michael Leiter, is confirmed to speak at this summer's Aspen Security Forum.
