• Eric Schmitt: U.S. Fears Al-Qaeda in Syria

    Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan has expressed concern that al-Qaeda affiliated militants may attempt to use Syria as a staging ground for future attacks on the United States. Speaking to a House panel, Director Brennan told lawmakers that, “we are concerned about the use of Syrian territory by the al-Qaeda organization to recruit individuals and develop the capability to be able not just to carry out attacks in inside of Syria, but also to use Syria as a launching pad.” Large groups of militants and midlevel planners have traveled in recent months from Pakistan to Syria, heightening fears that the conflict-torn state could provide a sanctuary for one of the world’s most notorious terrorist groups.
