Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel is a career Senior Foreign Service Officer. Previously, he served as Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs, helping to formulate President Obama’s strategic rebalance policy. Other prior assignments include: Director, Office of Japanese Affairs; U.S. Consul General in Osaka-Kobe; Deputy Chief of Mission at The Hague; Deputy Chief of Mission in Nicosia; and Chief of Staff to Under Secretary Thomas R. Pickering. Before joining the Foreign Service, he was manager for an international firm in New York City.
